March 2023 update SA Forecast prepared between March 21-23rd 2023 Review: G’Day everyone, quick little update as we approach the later parts of the month now. Not a huge amount has been going on in terms of rainfall across out state this month so far but certainly the pattern has been fluid with constant changes from warm to cool, to windy to calm. A notable event recently was the severe gully wind/downslope events on the morning of March 20th with a focus around the eastern suburbs and foothills of Adelaide. This occurred as a strong ridge moved in rapidly from the west whilst a trough was deepening further NE really tightening the gradient. The cooling effect and sinking air funneling through the gullies did the rest with near calm conditions only a few km further west at times whilst 90-110km/hr winds ripped through the Eastern/NE and parts of the southern suburbs. Just after this an upper-level trough was able to induce some patchy rain areas and isolated thunderstorms on the 21st ...

March 2023 outlook SA Forecast prepared between March 7th-9th 2023 Review: G’Day one and all, sorry for the delay to this outlook, I’ve been away on a long-awaited trip! The March outlook rainfall wise won’t truly reflect as a forecast given a week has already lapsed but this will at least encompass what is left. Only scattered showers have occurred so far this month with a couple of troughs but some mid-level based thunderstorms did pass through the agricultural areas during the late afternoon and evening of the 5th, but rainfall totals were light. A quick look back at February, usually a hot month and generally un-inspiring over SA and parts of VIC and this one was no exception. No significant tropical infeed which resulted in mostly stable conditions. A cold start blended with a hot finish saw temperatures come in close to average however a majority of the state was slightly above average, but the Lower SE remained slightly below. Rainfall wise most of the state once again came in b...

February 2023 update SA *Forecast prepared between Feb 17-20th 2023 Review: G’Day everyone, hope you are keeping well, another mid-month update is upon us and although not a great deal has happened weather wise this month in SA, the overall patterns on a more global and regional scale are starting to show signs of shifting just a little bit. The pendulum is beginning its move back the other way as the La Nina gradually loses some muscle but that is just in the ocean’s, we still have the good ol atmospheric lag to deal with for a little while yet. The first half of February has seen a wide array of conditions with the very cold start from the polar blast, with squally showers and damaging winds occurring over a swath of the SE of the state with some handy totals of rain, though generally for most areas south of about Adelaide. However, some handy streams did set up into the Lower and Upper North areas with Port Pirie of all places really nailing one evening with 20-25mm falling within t...

February 2023 outlook SA *Forecast prepared between January 30th – Feb 2nd 2023 Review: G’Day everyone, hope you are keeping well. February is now upon us, not long now and the all-important growing season sowing period will be here! I will delve into that a lot more in the next few updates as we hone in on the expected conditions. January was another tricky month for the forecast and in many ways was very similar to 2022. A majority of the month was hot and dry, with both above average temperatures for most districts as well as below average rainfall right up until the 28th when a NW cloud-band developed along a very slow-moving cold front. This front initially looked like moving through fairly swiftly but a block to the east stalled things over the Far West of the state allowing more moisture to filter in from the tropics delivering areas of rain with some good falls across the Far West & West Coasts and also up into the NW Pastoral and no doubt these were welcome as these areas ...
